This is perhaps THE most beautiful piece I have ever made.
It is the direct result of inspiration, a love of clay, and a deep appreciation for the beautiful waters of this planet and the creatures that live there.
This teapot is a one of a kind, functional, sculptural piece, created through a combination of wheel-throwing and hand-building. A variety of glazing techniques, as well as different clay bodies, were utilized to achieve the contrasting design and colours of the octopus and the structure upon which it is wrapped.
Approximately 40 hours went into constructing this magnificent piece of art!
The body of the pot, the spout, and the lid are all wheel-thrown and made of red clay. The handle is a hand-built sculpture of an octopus, made of porcelain. I’ve used a combination of glazes and glazing techniques. First, I used masking tape to cover the sculptural part of the teapot and used an atomizer to spray on a gorgeous glinting, semi-matte, turquoise glaze. After this glaze was completely dry, I used melted wax to paint over it. Once the wax hardened, I glazed the interior of the pot with a stunning, two-tone eggshell glaze. At this point, I removed the masking tape on the octopus sculpture and sponged on the same eggshell glaze. The beauty of this glaze is two fold: not only does it set differently on the two clay bodies, but it also breaks into a splendid display of colour, sheen, and texture on the porcelain clay. As you can see, it sets into a rich, glossy, dark brown, with occasional gold flecks, where it has pooled in the tentacles of the octopus, contrasting the lighter, semi-glossed surface around it.
A pleasing pairing of colours, creating a charming, aquatic-inspired palette, that reminds of oceans, beaches, and the mysterious universe that lies beyond the deep blue-green waters of the sea.
A perfect piece for both home use and gallery display.
