September 30th, is Orange Shirt Day.

This day was founded by Residential School Survivor Phyllis Webstad to raise awareness about the truth of Canada's Residential School System and honour the legacy of the victims, Survivors, and their families. Many may not know that Phyllis Webstad had been bought a beautiful orange shirt that she was so excited to wear by her grandmother for her first day of her new school in 1973/1974. It was purchased from the Robinson's store, and Phyllis couldn't have been more excited about it!  On her first day of school, at the Mission, it was taken away from her. It confused her and made her feel as though nobody care. Imagine a single colour representing so much hurt and anguish.

This year, Orange Shirt Day is particularly special as it is marked by the FIRST EVER National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day of recognition will be honoured along with Orange Shirt Day every September 30th as a way to publicly recognize the atrocities and continuing injustices from the Residential School System, and the work that needs to be done towards Reconciliation.

The ongoing issues surrounding  the atrocities perpetrated by the Residential School System is incredibly painful and triggering for Indigenous peoples not only in Canada but around the world as well. This piece of history is very much still vivid for many surivors their children, and grandchildren. There is much work still to be done, and so much for Canadians to learn. We must do better for our Indigenous peoples.

There is no better day to reaffirm commitment to Reconciliation and healing for Indigenous communities.

ShopMigs will be contributing 10% of sales from this product or ANY Orange hoodie purchased to local Indigenous organizations to support the healing work that they are doing.
